How do Meta Description Tags Works in Blogger - Blogspot?

Meta description tags are words displayed on search engines below the search link. Meta description adds to the qualification of a blog post when it's displayed on search engine or social media.

Meta description makes the readers briefly understand what a particular post is talking about before opening it. It helps to add to the quality of a post making it more available for crawling by search engines.

We can’t guess how much it impacts in search engine ranking. But let's say it impacts a lot in the sense that if visitors are scrolling through the search results, reading the text snippets and deciding which one to visit. So, even though importance of meta keywords tag has faded away, meta description tag is still very useful.

Also understand that not all of you should worry about having meta description tags in posts or pages in as much as the content of your post is very unique and understandable for readers. You might only want to place description tags for vital contents, for which the automatically collected text description from the page itself is not adequate.

Making Use of Meta Description Tags in Blogger

When a blog is newly created using Blogger, meta description tag is turned off by default. It is advisable to switch it on and make use of it.

To turn on meta description tag in Blogger:

  1. On your Blogger's dashboard go to Settings
  2. Scroll through the bottom, then you will find "Meta Tags"
  3. Under "Meta Tags" you will see an option "Enable Search Description" with a toggle
  4. Click the toggle to switch on and the head moves right
  5. Then enter the description of your homepage in the text-area. It should be around 150 words.

Now you have successfully enabled meta description tags for your blog! Your homepage,label pages, archive pages and search page will be using the same tags you've entered above.

Meta Description Tags for Posts

After you have turned on Meta description tag for your blog, A new option will appear in the right side of the blog post composing area. by the right, a field namely “Search Description” will now be available, right under “Location” and above “Options”. Click on it and write down a meaningful, unique and short summary of the post you wanted to publish. That meta description will be used for that post in search engines.

For post with the absence of meta tags, no summary will be made for the page. Although meta tags can be added to a page manually in this way:

The codes above will add the title of your blog and the title of your post in the meta description area.

The codes should be properly placed in the <head>...</head> tag of the blog template xml file. To access this, go to Template > Edit HTML and add the codes.

Adding Meta Description Automatically in Blog

Usually in the <head>...</head> tag, there is an HTML lines which says; <b:include data='blog' name='all-head-content'/>

This line adds other important tags such as meta description (if enabled), meta content-type, favicon information, canonical URL information, RSS information, open ID information and some javascript codes to your blog automatically.

If you do intend to skip the all-head-content tag for blogger (which is not always recommended), you will have to add the codes manually to display meta information like description, favicon and canonical url.
